Baker O-Week 2023

SquishmallO-Week

Dear Baker Class of 2027,

Every year, a new group of students joins our Baker family and gets the chance to experience the excitement, thrill, and challenge of life at Baker and Rice, and it all starts with O-Week. This week marks the start of your time at Rice and at Baker, which we hope will be some of the most inspiring, intellectually challenging, and formative years of your lives. With August 13th just around the corner, we are so excited to be the first (but certainly not the last) to welcome you to Baker!

No other college can compare: we are the oldest, the classiest, and the best. Baker always comes first, whether you’re going by founding order, alphabetical order, or magnitude of awesomeness. Baker has a culture characterized by care and inclusivity.

We’re constantly changing and creating new traditions at Baker, and that’s where you come in. It might seem far off and vague, but you really are the future of this college. Without the driven, smart, and innovative people who get involved in our college and the university, Baker and Rice would not be as incredible as they are today. In the year that follows your O-Week experience, you will likely find that Baker College plays an important role in your time at Rice and will always have a special place in your heart.

Baker will become a place where you live, eat, sleep, and work. It will also inevitably become a home where you share, cry, love, and grow. When you ask a Bakerite what makes Baker so unique, they will almost certainly respond with stories and tales about the people at Baker: roommates, friends, and colleagues. Here, students are given the tools and freedom to make great things happen for our small but vibrant community. Whether it is helping plan Spirit Fridays, partaking in Baker Christmas family photos, or running the well-known Baker 13... there are many ways to delve into our college’s culture.

At Baker, we are one big family and treat each other as such. We are dedicated to supporting one another as we return to a new normalcy after the COVID-19 pandemic. Baker, as well as the Rice community as a whole, is a safe space for all students, and we will not tolerate any form of discrimination. You can expect respect, support, and care from your fellow peers at your new home. We are here to help you through your transition to Rice. As Coordinators, we have been working tirelessly to provide you the support network you can depend on to guide you through your first year at Rice and Baker. We hope that this book for SquishmallO-Week will provide you with a strong introduction to Baker and some wonderful Rice students and give you a better understanding of what we’re all about.

We can’t wait to see you in August!

welcome, class of 2027 〰️

With August 13th just around the corner, we wanted to be the very first to welcome you to our college, and now yours: Baker!

We are the oldest, classiest, and coolest college you will find at Rice.

As we always say, BAKER COMES FIRST, whether you’re considering college founding order, alphabetical order, or number of awesome students! At Baker, we love our traditions (which you’ll learn about soon!), but we also love creating new ones - that’s where you come in! Baker wouldn’t be the amazing place that it is without our motivated, smart, and diverse community, and we’re excited to see you become a part of it!
